Description / Expertise
The present painting dates from the period Gotch spent in Newlyn when, in accordance with Stanhope Forbes’ doctrine of plein-airism, he frequently worked outside in the open air, or directly in front of the model. He renders the stark simplicity of the cottage interior with an extraordinary richness, using the square-brush technique for which he and many of his Newlyn colleagues were particularly known.
