Description / Expertise
Paul Feiler first visited Cornwall in 1949 and, like many other artists of his generation, moved there in the early fifties.
His first Cornish paintings were drawn directly from the landscape - here the facets of farmland and coast are broken down into tonal areas in a manner similar to De Stael. The palette is drawn almost entirely from the blue of the sky which eclipses the greens of the land. Soon after this, Feiler moved further into abstraction, to larger, more gestural paintings. Here he is still carefully balancing a more subjective representation with his desire to capture the natural beauty before him.
