Description / Expertise
This important crimson-ground pot
pourri vase and cover is decorated
with four panels of domestic birds
in the manner of Melchior
Hondecoeter. The shape, which is
derived from the Vincennes pot
pourri à jour, circa 1752, was
introduced at Chelsea in 1759, as
was the crimson ground colour.
The panels are by the same
hand as the bird painting on
the Chesterfield, Foundling and
Dudley vases.
