Description / Expertise

This work demonstrates Nicholson’s attempt to achieve purity and an expression of ideal universal beauty using line, shape and colour. This feeling for order derived from visits to Mondrian’s studio during the thirties which inspired Nicholson to experiment with his interest in shifting depth and planar relationships.
Nicholson executed eight versions of Two Forms, all apparently during his time at the new family home, Dunlace, which he left in September 1942. The different colours imply the sand, sea and sky effect of a triple background. Notable owners of works from the series have included Curt Valentin and Graham Sutherland.
