Description / Expertise

Painted in ink and colour on a gold ground.

The screen depicts a black lacquer shodana (display cabinet) with shelves holding scholars’ objects and an ikebana arrangement of tsubaki (camellia) and grasses in a basket.
The right hand panel shows a young man resting on a Chinese-style red and gold lacquer box. To the side of him is a bronze flower vessel containing an ikebana arrangement of kuri (Japanese chestnut).

A screen with an almost identical design is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
