A George III mahogany library armchair covered in needlework

A George III carved mahogany library armchair in the manner of Wright and Elwick covered in laterfloral needlework. The acanthus-clasp carving to the cabriole legs, cabochon and acanthus carved feet and solid mahogany construction are characteristic features of the documented work of the leading Yorkshire cabinet-making firm of Richard Wright and Edward Elwick (1745-71). They advertised themselves on their trade card as ‘Upholders from London… selling Cabinet work of ye Newest Fashion, Together with all sorts of Household Furniture’. It is possible that Richard Wright was a director of the Soho tapestry factory before moving to Wakefield where the firm was located.
