An exceptional James II longcase clock of small proportions in an excellent state of preservation.
The superb case is walnut and kingwood veneered with inset panels of bird and floral marquetry of various woods set against a kingwood background. There are replaced bun feet to the base, a lenticle to the door and the hood is flanked by the original walnut barley twist columns. The hood has been converted from rising to pull forward. Unusually the sides to the hood and the trunk are veneered with matching floral marquetry. The 10 inch brass dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring and cherub head spandrels to the corners. The dial centre is matted with date aperture and has blued–steel pierced hands.
The eight-day duration, five-pillar movement has an anchor escapement and hour strike via an outside locking plate.
* George Brooke was born circa 1657 and was an active member of the Clockmakers Company from 1681 until his death in 1701.
