Description / Expertise

A rare James II winged brass lantern clock, the dial with beautifully engraved centre and alarm disc for setting the mechanism. The case with engraved and signed front fret surmounted by the hour bell.
Good lantern clocks by eminent makers with centrally swinging pendulum are extremely rare. Thomas Wheeler is known to have been fond of this style of lantern clock and examples by this maker are referred to in English Lantern Clocks by George White.

*Thomas Wheeler, London, was apprenticed to Nicholas Coxeter in 1647/8 and freed in February 1656/7. He held a number of official positions within the Clockmakers’ Company including Assistant in 1674, Warden from 1680 and Master in 1684.

The case and movement of this clock remain very much in their original state. The alarm work and verge escapement are original.
